The Coral Reef Principle is not only the title of the first exhibition of the SHIM Eco group, it is also the basic structure that this ecosystem of creativity will be organized upon.
A coral reef is both the world’s largest organism, as well as the largest undesigned structure in the world. It is a complementary biosphere whereby every component makes it possible for each other component to survive without modifying its own needs. Crucially in this model there is no master architect, nor the need for one, because the structure literally builds and maintains itself once all the correct conditions exist. It is this concept, or “principle” that SHIM Eco wants to mirror in this exhibition. SHIM Eco was created to become the world’s first art community solely focused on Climate Change, and all of the economic and social disruptions that attach to this global crisis. It exists as an online exhibitor group of the SHIM Art Network Artsy site page to allow artists to sell their sustainable eco based artworks directly to collectors without the need of a gallery affiliation; and now with this event SHIM Eco will begin to exhibit their group member artists in analog galleries, and art fairs around the world; but Eco was formed to include not only visual artists, but all writers, designers, poets, and creators of all types interested in developing a sustainable way to make and promote their works, and so begin a conversation concerning the ethical and environmental issues attached to the global art market.
The inaugural exhibition begins in the historic Arcade Mall in Bridgeport, Connecticut with our gallery partners Ursa Gallery, and the show will feature a group of 7 individual curators who will then invite over 100 artists - in analog or digital formats - from the U.S. and around the world including Europe, Africa, South America, the U.K., and the U.S. who all work addressing concepts of climate change or its effects. The actual gallery installation of the art will also mimic the ways a coral reef operates by visually connecting larger works on walls with other smaller artworks that engage with the space of the floor, ceilings, and other in-between areas, and these works in turn will connect remotely via videos to other artists around the world.
