The Eco-Squisite Corpse:

A collaborative art work
The original Occupy Movement began in 2011 as an open-sourced interrogation of market capitalism in the wake of the 2009 collapse of Wall Street. One of the defining features of Occupy was the “commons”, or a shared space of civil discourse. A place where all opinions and viewpoints could be discussed openly without rancor. To honor the spirit of this movement the SHIM Art Network, in alliance with the Occupy #3 event’s curatorial team, has created the Eco-Squisite Corpse project which is based on the 1930’s Surrealist parlor game called the Exquisite Corpse. There artists would individually draw on folded sheets of paper that allowed each to only view the work of the artist next to themselves. When opened, it would reveal a new collaborative piece that would be unimaginable by any one of them alone. The idea now was to have a unified object that gave artists, isolated by COVID-19, a way to share their thoughts on climate change, social justice, or simply to have a bit of fun with others. Each 12 x 12 inch piece of paper could be done alone, or shared with others, but must somehow connect to the one before, and provide a continuing “trail” for the next one coming after; a kind of visual analog to the original Occupy “commons”. The work here also mirrors a classical Greek frieze, as it is “read” horizontally like a scroll or text. Because of limited space, we tried to keep the full length of the Eco-Squisite Corpse to approximately fifty running feet, but in theory, it could continue on indefinitely. The result was a joyful game that we think is also a beautiful artifact of sharing and compassion in a trying time.
